Thrifting in Lynchburg

For a long time, I have tried to put my finger on the pulse of thrifting in Lynchburg, and while I might have glimpsed a beat here and there, it took me nearly a decade to plug into the rhythm of that culture and become a part of it. Undeniably, there is a subculture of thrifting, an underground movement of community and a respect for similar values. People of the thrift culture understand the merit in conservation, supporting local businesses and nonprofits, appreciating the rich history of vintage and antiques, and salvaging what would inevitably end up in landfills. Thrifting is not merely about saving money or barely scraping by with second-rate merchandise, but rather it's about not wasting what is hard-earned. Thrifting is not just a choice or a decision made; but rather, it's a lifestyle. People from all cultures and socioeconomic stations get the "junk fever," and it's completely, utterly, and totally exhilarating!

Thrifters and junkers are treasure hunters, adventurers, historians, competitors, curators, and visionaries. They rescue our forgotten relics from obscurity and bring them back to life; they repurpose obsolete artifacts and technologies, and they keep alive the folk tradition of word-of-mouth storytelling as it seems that the real value of the whole experience is the community we keep alive and thriving as we exchange our treasures, our motivations, and our histories.

I was never able to find any relevant or current information online about the thrifting community in Lynchburg, so I have decided to do what I can to help other interested Lynchburg-and-surrounding-area residents plug into the pulse. What I will try to do is make you aware of the thrift shops, flea markets, antique shops, and consignment shops.

Hopefully, some of these reviews and features on local places will help make it easier for you to navigate the junking lifestyle and save you a decade of trial-and-error attempts.
